What is Genealogy?

Genealogy is the study of family lineages and family history. Family history has been popularised by television shows such as Who Do You Think You Are? in which celebrities uncover the extraordinary stories belonging to their ancestors.

But genealogy does not belong exclusively to the rich and famous. You also have a story waiting to be uncovered, and it would be our honour to turn that story into a written history which will be cherished by your family for generations to come. Choose from a standard or a extended report, and give copies to your relatives to remind them of your shared heritage.

What is Genetic Genealogy?

Millions of people around the world have tested their DNA in the hope of learning more about their heritage. Genetic genealogy is the combination of DNA test results and traditional family history research. DNA results give limited information without the support of a well-researched family tree, so if you’ve taken a DNA test and you allow us access to your DNA data then we can incorporate the genetic information into your genealogical report to give you a better understanding of what it all means.

If you have received your DNA results and you’re simply confused and overwhelmed by all the information, you are not alone. We can walk you through your results and help you apply them to what you already know of your heritage.

If you are thinking of testing but are uncertain about whether it would be useful for you, we offer impartial advice on this subject. The ISOGG website is also a great impartial resource if you would like to learn more.

Research and Reports

If you are interested in hiring House of Genealogy to carry out genealogical research, contact us by email to arrange a free phone or Skype consultation. During the consultation we will decide which package best suits your requirements and your budget.

The cost of genealogical records such as birth, marriage and death certificates will be charged in addition to the cost of the research package, but a budget for this will be decided in advance and you will always be consulted before this budget is exceeded.

You can choose to receive the research in the form of a standard report or a extended report.

Standard Report

Standard reports include all the important information discovered about your family’s history, as well as a fully referenced list of sources, enabling future researchers to build on what has been uncovered so far without having to replicate any of the searches.

Extended Report

Extended reports include images, historical and contextual information about the world in which your ancestors lived, and are presented in the form of a full narrative report. If you have taken a DNA test, then an interpretation of your results can be written into a chapter at the end of the narrative. They make excellent gifts for family members, and they are also fully referenced, allowing the research to be built upon in the future.

Skype Classes and Consultations

Both one-to-one genealogy lessons and genetic genealogy consultations are delivered over Skype. The fee for these is £25 per hour. The length of the lesson or consultation will be decided in advance, but you are always welcome to come back if you would like to learn more! Weekly lessons are also available for the avid learners among you.
